Denmark experiences rare weather phenomena: Heavy rain, hail, and potential tornadoes hit the country. Several parts of Denmark are facing unusual weather phenomena on Saturday, with heavy rain, hail, and strong gusts of wind causing challenges. The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) has recorded heavy rain in four locations, while large hail has fallen in both Jutland and Funen, according to DMI meteorologist Lars Henriksen.
“We rarely see this kind of weather here in Denmark. It resembles more the extreme conditions one can experience in the US,” Lars Henriksen told Ritzau on Saturday afternoon.
The recorded heavy rain has hit Emmerlev in South Jutland, Himmerland, Kegnæs Fyr on Als, and Røsnæs Fyr on the Røsnæs peninsula. The amount of precipitation measures 20.8, 16.2, 17.6, and 15.7 millimeters of rain, respectively.
Additionally, TV 2 Funen reports a funnel cloud at Hasmark in North Funen, and DMI has observed signs of a tornado northeast of Samsø. Although these are currently just indications, Lars Henriksen does not rule out the possibility of tornadoes.
“We are experiencing several rare atmospheric conditions right now, including high humidity and heat, as well as special wind conditions. These conditions can lead to the formation of supercells, which are often the source of tornadoes,” he explains.
The specific atmospheric conditions that create this type of weather are not something Denmark often sees, but the current conditions have made it possible.
