Heavy rain has subdued the unrest at this year’s Roskilde Festival, where many festival-goers have chosen to stay in their tents or go home. This has resulted in a more peaceful festival compared to previous years. According to Søren Danielsen, deputy police inspector at the Midt- og Vestsjællands Politi (Mid- and West Zealand Police), the wet weather has led to fewer disturbances in the camping area. “It has rained a lot, which has dampened some of the disturbances we usually experience. Many people stay more inside their tents or go home more than they normally would,” he explains, adding that there has not been as much intense activity in the camping area, which has reduced disruptive behavior.
The police have noticed a generally good atmosphere among the guests, who have shown tolerance and friendliness. Although they have not yet tallied the exact number of reports, there is a picture emerging of fewer incidents compared to previous years. The typical reports involve theft, violations of the public order, violence, and a few cases of indecent exposure and rape.
The festival’s security chief, Morten Therkildsen, describes this year’s festival as relatively calm from a security perspective. “When so many people are gathered, it’s always a bit wild, but the security level this year has been very normal and fairly calm,” he says. He also highlights that the festival’s procedures in relation to the weather have worked well and emphasizes that there is always something to learn for the future.
Although there has been a lot of mud on the site, it has not created major safety issues. “You just need to wear good boots. When we look at the participants, they are quite robust. Of course, it’s annoying when the area gets wet, but it’s more of an irritation,” Therkildsen says.
To ensure the safety of the festival, a larger contingency is working, including doctors, nurses, paramedics, guards, and social workers. In addition, around 6000 volunteer security guards and service workers contribute to maintaining safe conditions for the guests.
