Soon, you may have the chance to enhance your cultural experiences by collecting trash in Copenhagen. Wonderful Copenhagen is launching the pilot project “CopenPay” this summer, where environmentally friendly actions will be rewarded with free access to cultural experiences in the capital. The project aims to promote sustainable choices among both locals and tourists.
Rikke Holm Petersen, the communication director for Wonderful Copenhagen, explains: “We have great ambitions for sustainable transition in the capital in the coming years. One of many steps is to change the behavior of our visitors.”
The initiative, running from week 29 to week 32, will be visible to tourists upon their arrival at the airport and other transportation methods in Copenhagen, where ads for “CopenPay” will greet them. The goal is to inspire tourists to adopt green habits to take back home.
The success of the project will be evaluated afterwards, where Wonderful Copenhagen will decide whether to repeat or expand it next summer. Tourists and locals will be rewarded for actions such as cycling or participating in cleaning up plastic waste. Rewards range from guided museum tours and kayaking experiences to vegetarian lunches, all without any cost.
The system operates on trust, where, for example, one can show a picture of their bike as entry to a cultural attraction. 24 attractions are participating in the project, including the National Museum, the National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhill, and the bike rental company Donkey Republic. For example, plastic waste deposited at the National Gallery of Denmark can grant access to a workshop where the waste is transformed into artworks.
