“Dance World Champion and ‘Vild med dans’ Judge Passes Away”

World champion in ballroom dancing and longtime judge on the Danish TV show “Vild med dans” (Dancing with the Stars), Jens Werner, has passed away after a long battle with cancer. His family announced that he peacefully passed away on July 9 at the age of 59.

Jens Werner is survived by his wife Anette Werner and their two children. He was a world champion in ballroom dancing and has won numerous national and international championships. In 1994, he became a world champion, and with an impressive career behind him, he is known as the most successful dancer in Danish history.

In a statement from the family, Jens Werner is described as not only a talented athlete and judge, but also as a loving spouse, father, son, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle. He served as a judge in all 20 seasons of “Vild med dans” and was a central figure in the program’s success.

Jens Werner announced in the spring of 2023 that he had been diagnosed with cancer. Despite his illness, he continued as a guest judge in the latest season of “Vild med dans” in 2023, which he declared would be his final appearance as a judge.

In May of this year, Jens Werner marked the 30th anniversary of his world championship win in ballroom dancing on his Instagram profile. In a video celebrating this milestone, he urged his followers to “keep fighting.”

Jens Werner and his wife have run a dance school together, which the family’s announcement confirms will continue to operate and carry on Jens’ passion and joy for dance.

Several people from the “Vild med dans” universe have expressed their sadness and respect for Jens Werner. Former host Sarah Grünewald wrote on Instagram, “Rest in peace, my friend.” Dancers Thomas Evers Poulsen and Mads Vad have also shared their memories and respect, with Mads Vad mentioning that just a few months ago he had lunch with Jens Werner and described him as unique.

Jens Werner’s funeral will take place on July 19 at St. Paul’s Church in Copenhagen.
