Danish emergency services are preparing for this weekend’s heavy rainfall without major concerns. Even though the forecasted downpour could bring significant amounts of rain, Danish emergency services do not see a immediate need for greater concern. According to chairman Jarl Vagn Hansen, who is also the director of the emergency services in the Triangle Area, this is not a situation where lives are at risk.
Jarl Vagn Hansen stated, “From an emergency preparedness perspective, it is not a matter of life or death. However, it is important to be aware of the large amount of precipitation, which can lead to water damage.” The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) has issued a warning that up to 80 millimeters of rain could fall within a day over the weekend, leading to local flooding. This could particularly become problematic if the sewer systems are not properly cleaned or if the soil becomes oversaturated.
Around the country, emergency services and fire departments have coordinated their efforts and ensured they are ready to respond to any incidents. Jarl Vagn Hansen pointed out that it is difficult to predict exactly what situations they will be called out to, as heavy rainfall can be very localized.
“It is challenging to fully prepare for a downpour, as the amount of precipitation can vary greatly locally,” he said. Potential issues that may arise include water pooling in inconvenient places, causing damage. Drivers are encouraged to be particularly attentive, as water can collect in depressions and viaducts.
“It is important to adjust your speed while driving to avoid driving into areas with standing water,” Jarl Vagn Hansen concluded.
