Member of Parliament Mike Fonseca has once again sparked debate with his relationship with a young girlfriend, which he initiated when she was only 15 years old and in 8th grade. In a new interview with TV 2, Fonseca stated that he doesn’t see what he has done wrong. “I can understand that people may have an opinion that it was poor judgment. Okay, sorry. But what have I done to you? It’s not something I can answer. I care for the person I am with. And I also enjoy being in politics,” he told TV 2.
When the relationship became known last year, it led to Fonseca being excluded by the Moderates (Moderaterne). He has since been on sick leave for an extended period and now functions as an independent member of Parliament at Christiansborg.
The chairman of the Moderates and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, stated in November that he had advised Fonseca to resign from Parliament to protect both himself and the young girlfriend. “If he wants to protect the girl, if he wants to protect himself, if he wants to protect the party he once chose to run for, and if he wants to protect the government, which was the whole rationale for making this party, then he should resign from Parliament,” Lars Løkke Rasmussen told the press.
Løkke also emphasized that a future as an independent member could be lonely for Fonseca. “I think it will be lonely for him if he continues at Christiansborg,” Løkke said.
Despite the advice from the party leader, Mike Fonseca chose to remain in Parliament as an independent member.
