A new survey from Voxmeter shows that many Danes are unsure about the future role of the regions. According to the survey, conducted between June 25 and 28 with 1007 participants, 34.4 percent believe it would be positive to abolish the regions and replace them with a different structure. Around 20.7 percent are against, while approximately 26 percent are neutral, and nearly 20 percent are unsure.
The Chairman of Danish Regions, Anders Kühnau (Social Democrats), interprets the result as an indication that there is not broad public support for abolishing the regions. However, he acknowledges that there is a desire for change among the population. Kühnau refers to the report of the Health Structure Commission, which presents three potential models for the future healthcare system. Two of these models involve some form of abolishing the regions in their current form.
Kühnau is convinced that a total abolition of the regions will not receive political support. He emphasizes that healthcare is an important issue for Danes, and it would be strange to remove political control over it.
Among the three government parties, only the Moderates clearly want to abolish the regions. The Moderates’ political spokesperson, Monika Rubin, rejects Kühnau’s claim that such a change is not politically viable. She believes that the commission’s models should be studied carefully and is confident that a solution can be found that meets the population’s desire for change in the healthcare system.
