In 2023, Danish parents most often chose the names Frida and Carl for their newborn children. According to new data from Statistics Denmark, 15 out of 1000 newborn girls were named Frida, while 16 out of 1000 newborn boys were called Carl. The list of the most popular baby names in 2023 shows that Frida and Carl took the top spots. However, four new names have also entered the top 50 list: Solveig and Sofie for girls, as well as Kalle and Leo for boys. The name Leo has seen a remarkable rise, from 65th place in 2022 to 49th place last year. Solveig has also made a significant leap and is now the 39th most popular girl’s name, a rise of 13 places.
Some names, however, have lost their popularity. Milas, Vilhelm, Johanne, and Emilie have all dropped out of the top 50 list. Despite Frida and Carl’s overall popularity, it varies across regions. Carl is most popular in Copenhagen, while Frida tops the name list in both East Jutland and West Jutland. William, which has been the most popular boy’s name several times in the past, remained highly placed as the second most popular name last year. The girl’s name Ella, which was at the top in 2022, has fallen to third place. Merle has experienced the biggest drop among girl’s names, from 29th place in 2022 to 42nd place in 2023.
Frida and Carl have previously been among the most popular names. In 2022, Frida was the fourth most popular girl’s name, while Carl was the second most popular boy’s name. This confirms that their popularity has been steadily increasing in recent years.
