Sunday evening could bring local cloudbursts and thunderstorms in parts of Jutland, warns the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI). The warm and sunny weekend seems to be ending with a spell of humid air from the North Sea, which according to duty meteorologist Trine Pedersen could result in heavy rain and thunderstorms. “It will be a beautiful and warm Sunday during the day. After 6 pm, humid air from the North Sea will arrive, which can trigger showers with rain and thunder,” says Trine Pedersen.
The warning covers most of Jutland, except for East Jutland and the northernmost Jutland. The risk of cloudbursts is present, and the criterion for cloudbursts is defined as more than 15 millimeters of precipitation in 30 minutes. “There are mixed opinions about where cloudbursts are most likely. As it stands now, it is in Central and Northern Jutland,” adds Trine Pedersen.
Although TV 2 Weather has reported that certain municipalities may receive precipitation levels equivalent to an entire year’s worth in the coming days, Trine Pedersen cannot confirm this. According to TV 2 Weather, as of July 20, 559.4 millimeters of precipitation has fallen nationwide, where the annual average is just under 760 millimeters. Municipalities such as Vejen, Vejle, Billund, and Esbjerg are already close to reaching this year’s average precipitation.
The showers are expected to diminish during Sunday evening and will move eastwards towards Funen and Zealand on Monday. “The showers will be less intense towards the end of the evening and during the night,” says Trine Pedersen. Temperatures could reach up to 27 degrees on Sunday, providing ample opportunity to enjoy the sun before the weather changes.
