Beach Lifeguards Warn: Pay Attention to Wind Conditions at the Beach
TrygFonden Kystlivredning urges beachgoers and water sports enthusiasts to be very attentive to wind conditions before heading into the water. The reason for this call is the busy weekend that lifeguards have experienced due to challenging wind conditions.
The hot summer has attracted many people to the beaches, making it a hectic time for coastal lifeguards. Anders Myrhøj, chief lifeguard at TrygFonden Kystlivredning, states that we are facing a period of relatively strong winds for this time of year, coming from different directions.
Therefore, he emphasizes the importance of being aware of whether the wind is onshore or offshore. Onshore wind blows from the sea onto land, creating life in the water and bigger waves. This can result in stronger currents and rip currents, which globally are the leading cause of drownings, explains Anders Myrhøj.
TrygFonden’s coastal lifeguards recommend beach visitors to stay in areas where there are no active rip currents. The lifeguards are present at 34 beaches and harbor baths around the country this summer and can guide beachgoers to safe areas.
Anders Myrhøj points out that it’s always a good idea to swim close to the lifeguards if you want to go into the water. Lifeguards can quickly intervene and assist in case of dangerous situations.
