The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) has warned of potential cloudbursts and thunderstorms over large parts of the country, including most of Jutland, Funen, as well as West and North Zealand. According to DMI, the risk of heavy showers that could lead to cloudbursts will also apply to the rest of the country except for Bornholm. This warning is triggered by a low-pressure system moving in from the west. Showers are expected to cease in West Jutland before evening, while the rest of the country might have to wait for the precipitation to decrease during the evening. These showers can locally be extremely intense and accompanied by thunder, with the possibility of more than 15 millimeters of rain in just 30 minutes, which is the criterion for a cloudburst.
DMI, however, emphasizes that there is still uncertainty about exactly where and when the heavy showers will hit. Earlier in the day, DMI warned of the risk of local cloudbursts and thunderstorms in virtually the entire country, but the warning has since been upgraded. Tuesday’s warning follows a prolonged period of significant rainfall. DMI announced on Monday that the period from July 2023 to June 2024 with a total of 1125 millimeters of rainfall has become the wettest twelve consecutive months since 1874. The wettest July on record was last year with 141.2 millimeters of rain, while the driest July months were recorded in 1983 and 1994, when only 15 millimeters of rain fell.
