# 61-Year-Old Man Sentenced to Indefinite Detention for Rape of Nine-Year-Old Girl in Greenland
In a tragic case from Greenland, a 61-year-old man has been sentenced to indefinite detention for multiple offenses against a nine-year-old girl. The district court in the town of Ilulissat delivered the verdict on Thursday, according to a press release from the Greenlandic Police (Grønlands Politi).
The man was found guilty of raping, attempting to rape, and violating the modesty of the young girl, whom he assaulted multiple times in his home between 2020 and 2022. The Greenlandic Police received the report of abuse on May 23 of last year, and the man was arrested the following day.
Special prosecutor Gutti Harryson emphasized in the press release that the convicted individual has previous convictions for similar offenses, which supports the prosecution’s claim that he poses a danger to society. A psychological evaluation of the man and an opinion from the Danish Institute of Forensic Medicine (Retslægerådet) were used as grounds to seek his detention.
The 61-year-old has now been given time to consider whether he will appeal the verdict. The district court has decided that he will remain imprisoned during any potential appeal process.
“For this reason, I believe that the man is a danger to the citizens of the community, a view that was shared by the court,” stated Gutti Harryson.
This case unfortunately illustrates the serious issues surrounding sexual abuse in Greenland and the necessity for strong legal measures to protect the most vulnerable members of society.
