A 14-year-old skateboarder from Japan, Coco Yoshizawa, has secured the gold medal in women’s street skateboarding at the Paris 2024 Olympics, in a final that featured exclusively teenage competitors. Her compatriot, 15-year-old Liz Akama, took home the silver medal, while Brazilian skateboarder Rayssa Leal claimed the bronze at Place de La Concorde on Sunday.
Yoshizawa delivered an impressive score of 272.75 points based on her best three runs, ensuring her victory. Akama closely followed with a score of 265.95 points in second place, while Leal finished the competition with 253.37 points, solidifying her bronze position. Despite her previous success of winning silver at the Tokyo Olympics, Leal was the eldest among the medalists in Paris at 16 years old.
After heavy rain forced the postponement of the men’s event the day before, the sun shone brightly on Sunday, turning the temporary arena into a vibrant melting pot for spectators. Competitors have the opportunity to fall and still not receive a score up to four times during their seven attempts. Yoshizawa approached her second-to-last trick with two strong scores, yet needed a third to complete her overall total. She opted for a high-risk maneuver down a rail and successfully executed it.
Despite her rivals having one more run, Yoshizawa raised her skateboard overhead in triumph. The skateboarders will be back in action on Monday for the men’s street event, which had been postponed from Saturday. With defending Olympic champion Yuto Horigome, Sora Shirai, and 14-year-old Ginwoo Onodera among the competitors, Japan may dominate this discipline once again.
