Copenhagen Hotels See Summer Gains Despite Overall Decline

According to Lars Ramme Nielsen, branch director at the Danish Business Authority (Dansk Erhverv), the number of hotel guests in June and July is slightly below the levels of 2022, although Copenhagen performed surprisingly well. “It’s a good and reasonable summer, but it’s probably just a notch below last year. Copenhagen is holding its own,” Nielsen states.

An increasing number of Americans have chosen Copenhagen as a travel destination, partly due to easier access with new flight routes to Copenhagen Airport. Despite this rise, the overall visitor numbers in the city still trail those of last year, which was also considered a “good year,” Nielsen adds.

The temporary decline during the summer months does not concern the branch director, as hotels have seen significant growth in the first five months of the year, with approximately 250,000 more bookings compared to the same period in 2022, according to data from Statistics Denmark (Danmarks Statistik).

The industry organization Horesta is also optimistic regarding the remainder of 2024, with 61 percent of hotels in Copenhagen expecting an increase compared to last year. Outside of Copenhagen, this figure stands at 55 percent. “This gives us a positive outlook,” says Jeppe Møller-Herskind, deputy managing director at Horesta, noting that August is anticipated to be the month with the most growth in the hotel sector.

Horesta represents over 2,200 members within the hotel and restaurant industry, providing a comprehensive insight into the sector.
