Typhoon Gaemi Causes Deadly Floods in China and North Korea

Typhoon Gaemi’s aftermath has struck China and North Korea with heavy rain, flooding, and landslides, resulting in dozens of fatalities. Early reports on Tuesday indicated that seven more people had been added to the death toll from the previous day, following a landslide that claimed at least 15 lives. This update brings the total number of fatalities since Sunday to 22.

The Chinese news agency Xinhua reported that four bodies were recovered in the city of Zixing. State television network CCTV also stated that the bodies of three other missing individuals were found in a nearby village. The torrential rain has battered Hunan Province for several days as Tropical Storm Gaemi moved inland after making landfall in the adjacent Fujian Province as a typhoon. The storm had previously affected Taiwan severely last week.

All fatalities in China have been recorded in Hunan Province, where an additional three people were reported missing on Tuesday. Xinhua added that the rain has damaged nearly 1,000 homes, forced the evacuation of over 11,000 people, and rendered 1,345 roads impassable in Zixing. Some areas within the city experienced record rainfall, with some locations receiving 645 mm (25 inches) in just 24 hours.

Simultaneously, almost 4,000 residents were evacuated in another part of the province due to a dam collapse. The flooding follows a landslide on Sunday that destroyed a guesthouse in Hunan, resulting in 15 fatalities. China is facing a summer of extreme weather, with heavy rain affecting large parts of the country while other regions experience intense heat waves.

On Monday, China’s National Meteorological Center issued an orange alert, the second-highest level, for rainstorms affecting large swathes of the southern, southwestern, and central regions of the country, as well as Beijing, Hebei Province, and Tianjin in the north. The heavy rainfall has caused significant pond breaches, leading to the flooding of vast agricultural areas. CCTV reported that the Ministry of Finance has allocated 238 million yuan (approximately 33 million USD) for disaster prevention and agricultural support.

Weather experts attribute the destructive rains to a combination of the southwestern monsoon and Typhoon Gaemi. This combination has also sparked storms in northeastern China and North Korea, resulting in rising water levels in the Yalu River, which separates the two countries. Severe flooding has been reported in the Chinese border city of Dandong and on the North Korean side.
