Former BBC Presenter Huw Edwards Pleads Guilty to Receiving Indecent Images of Children

Huw Edwards, a former star news presenter for the BBC, has pleaded guilty to three counts of receiving indecent images of children. During a court hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on Wednesday, Edwards admitted that between December 2020 and August 2021, he received a total of 41 indecent images of children via the messaging platform WhatsApp.

The 62-year-old, who was previously the highest-paid journalist at the BBC, faces a maximum prison sentence of 10 years, with a minimum sentence of 12 months. Judge Paul Goldspring indicated that the sentencing would take place on September 16, and that “all options,” including an immediate prison sentence, would be considered.

During the 25-minute hearing, prosecutor Ian Hope stated that Edwards had received a total of 377 sexually explicit images from an adult male via WhatsApp, of which 41 were classified as indecent and illegal images of children. Among these, seven images were of the most severe nature, including two pornographic videos of a child believed to be between seven and nine years old.

Edwards’ lawyer, Philip Evans, emphasized that the charges to which his client pleaded guilty pertained only to images that were sent to him via WhatsApp. “There is no suggestion in this case that Mr. Edwards in any way created, in the traditional sense, images in any physical manner or produced any forms of images,” stated Evans.

Edwards resigned from the BBC in April on “medical advice,” six months after he was arrested over allegations that he had paid a young person thousands of pounds for sexually explicit photos. For more than two decades, he was a prominent figure in the UK, known for announcing the death of Queen Elizabeth II to the nation in 2022 and for leading coverage of elections, royal weddings, and the 2012 Olympics.

He made no comment as he left the courthouse.
