In a deeply emotional statement, the Palestinian group Hamas has confirmed that their political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, has been killed in an attack carried out by Israeli forces at his residence in Tehran. Haniyeh, who attended the inauguration of the newly elected Iranian president, was killed in what Hamas describes as a “treacherous attack.”
In the statement, released in the name of God, the Most Merciful, Hamas expressed profound sorrow over Haniyeh’s loss, referring to him as “brother, leader, martyr, and Mujahid” (a term meaning “one who engages in Jihad”). They questioned the circumstances surrounding his death and asserted that martyrs are alive with their Lord and receive provisions from Him.
“To God we belong, and to Him we shall return. And this is a struggle; victory or martyrdom,” stated Hamas.
Haniyeh was a key figure within Hamas and played an important role in the Palestinian resistance against Israel. His death is expected to have significant implications for Hamas’ future strategies and relationships in the region.
Reactions from the Arab world and the international community have yet to emerge, but Hamas’ leadership has already warned that they will continue the fight for the Palestinian people despite the loss of their highly esteemed leader.
