Harris Rises in Polls, Ties with Trump Ahead of Election

The American Vice President Kamala Harris has closed the gap with former President Donald Trump in the race for the White House, according to new opinion polls. Harris has significantly narrowed the lead Trump held both nationally and in key battleground states, particularly after President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race.

A poll conducted by Bloomberg News/Morning Consult shows that Harris is ahead of Trump in four crucial battleground states, while Trump holds a lead in two. According to the poll, Harris has an 11-point lead in Michigan and a 2-point lead in Arizona, Wisconsin, and Nevada. Trump has a 4-point lead in Pennsylvania and a 2-point advantage in North Carolina, while both candidates are tied in Georgia. Outside of Michigan and Pennsylvania, all results fall within the margin of error. If the poll results were to reflect the outcome on election day, the candidate who wins Georgia would be elected president.

In a poll commissioned by the Democratic super PAC (Political Action Committee) Progress Action Fund, Harris leads with 48 percent compared to Trump’s 47 percent in Georgia, while Trump still maintains a 2-point lead in Arizona and Pennsylvania. All polls, first reported by The Hill, are within the margin of error.

A nationwide Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Harris ahead of Trump with 43 percent to 42 percent, which also falls within the margin of error. These positive poll results come after Harris has quickly consolidated support among Democrats following Biden’s decision to step aside, a move prompted by months of disappointing polling driven by concerns over his age and capabilities.

Harris, who will officially be named the Democratic nominee on Monday, is expected to announce her vice presidential pick in the coming days before embarking on a tour in the swing states that will determine the election on November 5. Among the proposed candidates are Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

During a campaign event in Atlanta, Georgia, Harris remarked that momentum in the race seems to be shifting and that there are signs Trump “feels the pressure.” She has attacked Trump over his legal troubles and his stances on healthcare and abortion, challenging her opponent to keep his promise to debate her in September after the Republican suggested he might “make a case” for skipping the event.

“Well, Donald, I hope you will consider meeting me on the debate stage,” she said. “Because as they say, ‘If you have something to say, say it to my face.’”
