On August 1, 2023, Denmark experienced its largest moving day of the year, with 35,000 people changing their addresses, according to Statistics Denmark (Danmarks Statistik). This day in August was noted as the biggest moving day of the previous year. Since 2011, August has traditionally been the month with the highest number of relocations, except for 2021. A significant portion of these moves occurs due to the start of the academic year, particularly around August 1 and August 15, when many young individuals take up new residences, explains Connie Østberg, an officer at Statistics Denmark.
Over the past year, a total of 854,000 Danes moved to a new address, with 85,900 relocations occurring in August alone. Among the most mobile demographic in 2021 were 22-year-olds, and individuals aged 20-29 accounted for 36 percent of all moves, despite representing only 13 percent of the population. Many young people move out of their family homes in their early twenties, primarily in connection with starting their studies. The group of 21 to 23-year-olds alone accounted for 104,400 moves last year, which corresponds to 12 percent of all relocations, adds Connie Østberg.
