Norlys, a Danish energy company, has issued a warning to its customers about fraudulent SMS messages pretending to be from the company. According to a recent press release from Norlys, unknown senders have been sending messages to customers urging them to pay a bill via an attached link. The messages also threaten that power will be disconnected if the payment is not completed.
Mads Brøgger, the director of Norlys’ energy division, encourages all customers who receive such messages to remain vigilant and delete them immediately. He emphasizes that these communications are phishing attempts, which misuse Norlys’ name and logo. “Unfortunately, we occasionally experience phishing attempts,” Brøgger stated. “The current SMS messages are very convincing, and I recommend that customers generally exercise skepticism before clicking on links in both SMS and emails.”
Typically, Norlys sends SMS messages to customers only when there is an outstanding energy bill; however, they never include a direct payment link. This makes the fraudulent messages particularly credible and dangerous. Consequently, the energy company has decided to file a police report in hopes of stopping the scammers and ensuring that their customers are not deceived.
Customers are urged to contact Norlys directly if they are uncertain about the authenticity of a message they have received. Brøgger concluded by stressing the importance of heightened security awareness and highlighted that the company is continuously working to improve the security of its communication channels.
