Swedish Teen Charged with Attempted Murder in Copenhagen Shooting

A 16-year-old Swedish boy was presented in the Copenhagen City Court on Thursday, charged with attempted murder following a shooting incident on Blågårds Plads on Wednesday evening. The boy denies the charges against him.

The charges include firing a shot with a 9mm Glock pistol at an unidentified individual, who was not hit, as well as possession of a 9mm Taurus pistol in an apartment in Hvidovre, a suburb of Copenhagen. According to the charges, the attempted murder and weapons possession allegedly occurred in collaboration with several unidentified accomplices.

The 16-year-old appeared in court wearing a dark blue tracksuit and was placed in custody for 27 days in a closed psychiatric ward. Due to the boy’s young age, both Danish and Swedish social authorities were present during the preliminary hearing.

Defense attorney Else Præstegaard and senior prosecutor Laura Birch requested the proceedings to be closed to the public, citing the boy’s age and the ongoing investigation. The judge granted this request, meaning that further details of the case remain confidential.

The shooting incident, which police were alerted to at 8:59 PM on Wednesday, did not result in any injuries, and the boy was arrested shortly after at 9:07 PM. Law enforcement has stated that the boy was not previously known to them. Duty officer Jonathan Wald mentioned that they could not exclude a gang-related motive, but the investigation continues broadly.

This case is part of a growing trend where young Swedes are being charged with serious crimes in Denmark. For instance, two boys aged 15 and 16 were held in custody in June for attempted murder at the Comanches’ clubhouse in Brøndby, another suburb of Copenhagen.
