A 22-year-old Danish man has been remanded in custody for two weeks by the Court in Aarhus due to suspicions of rape in Cyprus in 2022. The East Jutland Police (Østjyllands Politi) announced on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) on Friday morning that the man, who is internationally wanted by the Cypriot authorities, was arrested on Thursday at 10:08 AM.
On Friday morning, he was presented at a preliminary hearing, where it was decided that he would be detained until August 16, while the court investigates the possibility of extraditing him to Cyprus. The man has appealed the decision regarding his detention to the High Court (landsretten). This means that the High Court must now decide whether the initial ruling will be upheld.
The police have yet to provide information on when a decision regarding extradition will be made. During the preliminary hearing on Friday, the prosecution requested that the doors be closed, indicating that further details about the case would not be made public. The East Jutland Police have chosen not to comment further on the matter and are now awaiting the High Court’s decision.
