The number of applications for the initiative providing support for school starts has reached new heights, with nearly 1,500 children set to receive gift cards. For many families, especially those in financial distress, purchasing a new backpack, pencil case, pencils, and lunchbox can quickly become a significant economic burden. Danish Relief (Dansk Folkehjælp) is experiencing a record influx of applications this year, with nearly 2,900 parents seeking assistance for school supplies. Since the program’s inception in 2020, the demand has never been higher.
Support is offered through gift cards worth 2,500 Danish kroner (approximately $375) for 1,451 children, allowing them to buy the necessary equipment. Mirka Mozer, the Secretary General of Danish Relief, states that while many children look forward to their first day of school with excitement, those from financially struggling families often experience anxiety and feelings of exclusion. This impacts their ability to integrate into peer groups and feel secure.
The situation is particularly critical for families living on less than 2,000 Danish kroner (around $300) per month, as a lack of financial resources not only limits the purchase of school supplies but also affects children’s lives in various other ways. Evaluations from previous recipients indicate that nearly half of the families report that financial concerns restrict their children’s participation in extracurricular activities, and 70 percent have to forgo family outings.
Mirka Mozer emphasizes the importance of these activities and shared experiences, which can help prevent children from feeling isolated. “It is essential to ensure all children have a good start to their educational journey, characterized by security and equal opportunities,” she states.
The school year is just around the corner, with the first day of school following the summer break set for August 12.
