Algerian Teenager Kaylia Nemour Wins Historic Gymnastics Gold Medal

An Algerian teenager, Kaylia Nemour, cried tears of joy after becoming the first African athlete to win an Olympic medal in gymnastics, securing gold on the uneven bars at the 2024 Paris Olympics. This achievement not only made headlines but also instilled a sense of pride for her country, marking Algeria’s first-ever Olympic medal in gymnastics.

The 17-year-old, born in France, captivated the audience at the Bercy Arena with a stunning performance that earned her the top title, surpassing China’s Qiu Qiyuan, while Team USA’s Sunisa Lee took home the bronze medal. Defending Olympic champion on the uneven bars, Nina Derwael from Belgium, finished in fourth place.

Nemour faced considerable pressure when Qiyuan posted a score of 15.500 with a flawless routine; however, the rising gymnastics star exceeded the Chinese gymnast’s performance with an exceptionally difficult routine, which garnered her a score of 15.700. Her rapid routine included a series of complex release and catch maneuvers that thrilled the audience.

As soon as she landed, Nemour could not hold back her tears, realizing she may have secured her nation’s first gold medal in gymnastics. The atmosphere became emotional when her victory was confirmed, and she wrapped herself in the Algerian flag while accepting the cheers from the crowd.

“I am so shocked; this is a dream of my life. I can’t believe it has happened; I am speechless,” Nemour said following her victory. “In the qualification, I scored 15.600, and when I saw her 15.500, I told myself that I really had to fight and deliver the performance of my life.”

Nemour has represented Algeria since last year after a dispute with the French gymnastics federation. She received immense support at the Bercy Arena, having chosen to represent her father’s country after the French federation barred her participation on medical grounds following the conflict. Fans leaped to their feet as soon as Nemour completed her routine, while Derwael, who won at the most recent Tokyo Olympics, finished just 0.034 points shy of the podium.
