Denmark Hit by Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Across Regions

On Sunday morning, Denmark experienced a series of heavy rain showers resulting in six rainstorm events across various parts of the country, as reported by the Danish Meteorological Institute (Danmarks Meteorologiske Institut, DMI). The rainstorms affected regions in southwestern Jutland, Zealand, Funen, and Lolland. According to Erik Hansen, the duty meteorologist at DMI, these intense thunderstorms have moved away from these areas by the afternoon.

“The thunderstorms passed over the country during the day and have now moved on. Starting in Southern Jutland in the morning, they traveled across Funen and further to Copenhagen, where significant rainfall was recorded,” Erik Hansen explained. The severe weather is now moving towards Bornholm, an island in the Baltic Sea, where heavy rain and thunder are expected, but no rainstorms.

Today’s rainstorm events were recorded in major cities like Copenhagen and Kolding as well as smaller towns such as Bogense, Odense, Tønder, and Lolland. Kolding experienced the heaviest rainfall with 32.6 millimeters. “That is quite considerable, as we define a rainstorm when at least 15 millimeters falls within a half hour. Here, we are talking about more than double that,” said Erik Hansen.

In Copenhagen, 27.8 millimeters of rain was measured, and images showed the Nordhavnsvej Tunnel was flooded. “Throughout the Capital Region, there has been significant rainfall, and both Kolding and Copenhagen have experienced flooding,” he noted.

Although some light summer showers may occur later, there is no risk of further rainstorms, according to Erik Hansen. “We can expect some sunshine and only a few showers during the afternoon.” He also mentioned that Tønder Municipality received 15.3 millimeters of rain, Nordfyns Municipality recorded 17.6 millimeters, and Middelfart experienced 16.2 millimeters of rainfall.

In summary, today’s weather has posed challenges in many areas, but according to DMI, conditions are expected to calm down, leading to relatively pleasant summer weather later in the day.
