Enea Bastianini from Ducati celebrated a thrilling victory at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone, completing an impressive weekend with two wins. He crossed the finish line ahead of the new World Championship leader, Jorge Martin, and the runner-up Francesco Bagnaia.
Bagnaia, who qualified in second place on the starting grid for Sunday’s main race, made a strong start, leading ahead of pole-sitter Aleix Espargaro for the first lap. However, in the latter part of the race, he became embroiled in a battle for third place after Martin overtook him with eight laps remaining. Martin, racing for Pramac Racing Ducati, appeared to be in control and on his way to victory. But on the penultimate lap, he ran wide at turn three, allowing Bastianini to take the lead.
During the final one and a half laps, Bastianini showcased dominance, quickly increasing his lead over Martin, who had to settle for second place. Bagnaia managed to fend off six-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez to secure third place.
“It has been a very difficult race because I made some mistakes at the start and was in fourth place, but afterwards I became more confident…,” said Bastianini, who also won the sprint race on Saturday. He added, “I closed the gap to Aleix [Espargaro] and Pecco [Bagnaia]. The last four to five laps, Jorge [Martin] pushed very hard, and it was too difficult to close the distance to him.”
With this victory, Martin now leads the World Championship standings by three points ahead of Bagnaia, who slips to second place, while Bastianini remains in third. Marquez is currently ranked fourth in the standings.
The next MotoGP race will take place on August 18th in Austria.
