Christian Friis Bach has decided to change his political affiliation from the Radical Left (De Radikale) to the Liberal Party (Venstre). Although his views on issues such as immigration policy differ from those of Venstre, the party’s leader Troels Lund Poulsen assures that there is still a place for him within the party.
Speaking at the Danish Parliament, Lund Poulsen stated that Venstre’s political stance remains unchanged despite Friis Bach’s previous positions as a member of the Radical Left. “This is not an issue, as we have discussed. Venstre’s policy is exactly the same today as it was yesterday,” the chairman emphasized.
Christian Friis Bach, who previously served as the Minister for Development for the Radical Left, announced on Monday that he is joining Venstre in order to strengthen the government’s political majority. Despite differences, particularly regarding immigration policy where Friis Bach tends to be more supportive of refugees and migrants, Troels Lund Poulsen reassures that Venstre can accommodate diverse opinions.
Venstre’s openness is also highlighted in the context of environmental policy. Lund Poulsen mentions how, despite opposition from the agricultural sector, Venstre has forged agreements on CO2 taxes and green transition initiatives. “Venstre is a party that has historically entered broad political agreements. It demonstrates that discussions on various topics can lead to unification,” he stated.
Lund Poulsen firmly reiterated that Venstre’s policies have not changed and welcomed Friis Bach into the party. “Now Christian Friis Bach wishes to be a member of Venstre. I welcome that,” concluded Troels Lund Poulsen.
