Christian Friis Bach, a prominent figure in the Radicals (De Radikale) for many years, has made the surprising decision to switch to the Liberal Party (Venstre). This decision aims to strengthen the government’s position and has generated confusion and disappointment among his former party members.

Martin Lidegaard, the leader of the Radicals, expressed his regret over the switch, noting that it is a loss for the party in North Jutland, which has supported Friis Bach over the years. Lidegaard emphasized the significant political differences between the two parties, particularly on issues such as climate, environment, education, children’s policy, the rule of law, and integration, as reasons for his disappointment.

Less than a year ago, the Radicals were involved in negotiations to form a new centrist government, culminating in December 2022. Despite securing ministerial positions, Lidegaard withdrew the party from the negotiations at the last moment. This decision faced internal opposition, including from Christian Friis Bach, who now feels more at home in Venstre.

Friis Bach’s transition is expected to restore the government’s parliamentary majority. Despite their disagreements, Lidegaard respects Friis Bach’s decision and wishes him well for the future. He stresses that it is natural for individuals to follow their political convictions and thanks Friis Bach for his contributions to the Radicals.

Troels Lund Poulsen, the leader of Venstre, warmly welcomed Christian Friis Bach to the party. He looks forward to the collaboration and describes Friis Bach as a skilled and honorable politician who can positively contribute to Venstre’s efforts in the Danish Parliament (Folketinget).
