The government has regained a majority in the Folketing (Danish Parliament) following Christian Friis Bach’s switch to the Liberal Party (Venstre). Troels Lund Poulsen, the leader of Venstre, expressed his satisfaction, stating, “I am pleased that the government now has an extra mandate.” He emphasized that this change does not alter the government’s approach to forming broad political agreements.
Friis Bach’s transition from the Radicals (De Radikale) to Venstre is aimed at strengthening the centrist coalition. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has previously indicated that the Folketing should pass the green tripartite agreement without amendments. Friis Bach’s switch provides the government with a majority that could potentially ease negotiations.
Venstre, which has lost several key figures over the past five years, now sees a slight reinforcement with Friis Bach’s arrival. However, Lund Poulsen notes that party switches are always individual decisions, similar to when Mads Fuglede transitioned to the Denmark Democrats (Danmarksdemokraterne) earlier this year. With this new change, the government has regained its lost majority.
