Danish Politician Christian Friis Bach Switches to Venstre Party

Christian Friis Bach has announced his decision to switch to the Liberal Party (Venstre) after being a member of the Radical Left (De Radikale). This transition was revealed in a Facebook post, and several media outlets had already anticipated this move. Bach cites his belief in the political center as the reason for his change: “When I switched to the Radical Left, it was inspired by the book ‘Revolt from the Center,’ which discusses creating change from the middle,” he writes, adding, “I still believe in this, which is why I supported a government from the center.”

Although he does not agree with all decisions made by the current Social Democratic-led government, known as the SVM government (Socialdemokratiet, Venstre, and Moderaterne), he emphasizes his respect for their hard work and thus decides to show his support by transitioning to Venstre. “I have the utmost respect for the three governing parties’ efforts and wish to back them,” he states and continues, “This is why I have chosen to return to my original party, Venstre.”

Bach’s switch increases the number of mandates for Venstre to 23, while the Radical Left is reduced to six mandates. This change means that the government will now once again have an internal political majority with a total of 87 mandates, a situation that could strengthen them as the Green Tripartite Agreement is addressed in the Danish Parliament (Folketinget). Previously, the government has relied on support from other parties or members to secure a majority.

Bach has had a long career in politics since 2008 as a member of the Danish Parliament for the Radical Left and served as the Minister for Development Aid in the government of Helle Thorning-Schmidt from 2011 to 2013. His career also extends beyond Denmark, where he has held leadership roles in both the Danish Church Aid (Folkekirkens Nødhjælp) and the Danish Refugee Council (Dansk Flygtningehjælp).
