A woman testified today in the Copenhagen City Court regarding an uncomfortable experience with a 40-year-old taxi driver. She described feeling unable to say no to the driver, who allegedly assaulted her while she was “half-asleep” in the passenger seat. The woman stated that she was aware of what was happening but could not process or react to it due to her paralysis of action and intoxication.
The incident reportedly took place during the night of January 13, 2024, during a taxi ride from Copenhagen to Holbæk, a town located about 50 kilometers west of the capital. Video footage shows that the driver held the woman’s hand while she was heavily under the influence of alcohol and feeling unwell. During the ride, the driver began intertwining his fingers with hers. “I thought he was very sweet and caring,” the woman recounted, but she explained that the situation became inappropriate when he moved her hand to his lap. “If I hadn’t been drunk, I would have been able to say no,” she added.
The driver faces charges of rape involving sexual acts other than intercourse, as well as allegations of having violated two other women during his time as a taxi driver. When the taxi arrived at the woman’s home in Holbæk, the driver asked to use the restroom, which he was permitted to do. However, he attempted to engage in further sexual advances, but the woman said no and went to bed.
During her testimony, the woman also expressed her fear of creating an uncomfortable situation by saying no in the taxi. “Even if it had been an 80-year-old man, I couldn’t have said no in the state I was in,” she stated.
The court is expected to deliver a verdict in the case by Wednesday, August 7.
