The yacht Genesis is sinking in Gudhjem Harbor, prompting a significant emergency response on the island of Bornholm, Denmark. The incident occurred around 10 a.m. local time when the yacht began taking on water during maintenance work.
The Bornholm Fire Department (Bornholms Brandvæsen), along with the Danish Emergency Management Agency (Beredskabsstyrelsen), is on-site and working intensively to raise the vessel. They are attempting to use a crane to lift the yacht so that water can be pumped out and the boat stabilized. Per Zarzycki, the incident commander from the Bornholm Fire Department, explained that although they have the pumps ready, the volume of water that has entered the yacht makes it equivalent to emptying an entire harbor to pump out the water currently onboard.
Genesis is a type of boat known as a flybridge yacht, characterized by its open decks above the main bridge and capable of accommodating up to 12 people along the coasts of Bornholm. The vessel is owned by Baltic Yacht Bornholm, which has confirmed that no injuries occurred during the dramatic incident.
Involved parties continue to work to secure the boat in hopes of preventing any further damage.
