A shocking incident occurred on Monday evening when Mette Brandt, a 29-year-old horse owner from Ringsted, discovered her horse, Hungry Heart Firfod, with a bloody cut. The event took place on Slimmingevej, and Mette noticed the injury while bringing her horses in from the pasture around 7 PM. “They were running around, which is very atypical for them. From a distance, I saw that one mare had blood between her hindquarters,” she reported.
The Mid and West Zealand Police (Midt- og Vestsjællands Politi) confirmed the incident in their daily report, stating that a veterinarian examined the horse’s injuries at the property. Veterinarian Mia Eklund, who assessed Hungry Heart Firfod, is convinced that the injury was inflicted with a sharp instrument, such as a scalpel or knife. “It was a very clean cut, so my immediate thought is that unfortunately, a person must have cut the horse with a scalpel or knife blade,” she said.
The police are continuing their investigation and have secured a piece of the horse’s tail that was found on the ground for potential DNA analysis. So far, there have been no arrests or identified suspects. There is also concern regarding a similar case in Faxe Municipality, where three horses were found with cuts to their genital areas.
“This incident has made me extra vigilant about my horses. I have installed surveillance that I can monitor on my phone, and I receive notifications whenever there is movement in the driveway,” stated Mette Brandt, who has since brought her horses in from the pasture and is ensuring the property is monitored.
Mette Brandt encourages other horse owners who may experience similar incidents to promptly contact both the police and a veterinarian to secure evidence. “The veterinarian can find DNA traces inside the horse’s vagina, so it is important to secure all potential evidence,” she emphasized.
The Mid and West Zealand Police are calling on witnesses who may have seen individuals or vehicles in the Slimmingevej area on Monday evening to come forward. In the meantime, Hungry Heart Firfod has received treatment and is not expected to suffer any lasting effects from the incident.
