Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate for the presidential election, has reportedly selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, according to U.S. media sources. Harris, who is the first woman as well as the first Black and South Asian person to serve as Vice President in the United States, has undergone a swift selection process among a wide range of candidates after President Joe Biden announced he would not seek re-election on July 21.
Walz, who was elected as governor of Minnesota in 2018 and re-elected in 2022, brings considerable experience in defeating Republican opponents in a Midwestern state to the presidential campaign. Harris plans to hold a major rally with her vice presidential candidate later today in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a significant swing state. Several additional rallies are scheduled in Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, Arizona, and Nevada leading up to Saturday.
The duo will face off against the Republican nominee, former President Donald Trump, and his running mate JD Vance in the upcoming election in November. If they win, Walz would assume the role of Vice President.
As a veteran of the U.S. National Guard, Walz also serves as co-chair of the Rules Committee at the Democratic National Convention. During his tenure as governor, he has reportedly worked on initiatives related to the state’s approval of abortion rights, the protection of gender-affirming care, and the implementation of free school meals for students.
