Bangladesh’s Nobel Prize-winning economist, Muhammad Yunus, has been appointed as the leader of the country’s interim government following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has left the country amid widespread protests against her rule, primarily driven by student movements.
The announcement was made early on Wednesday by Joynal Abedin, the press secretary for President Mohammed Shahabuddin. Abedin further stated that the other members of Yunus’ government will be selected as soon as possible after discussions with political parties and other stakeholders.
Leaders of the student protests opposing Hasina’s administration, as well as commanders of the country’s three military divisions, civil society representatives, and several business leaders participated in a meeting with the President that lasted over five hours on Tuesday evening to determine who would lead the interim government.
The student leaders had previously nominated Yunus for the position, and he has reportedly given his acceptance. Local media reports indicate that he is expected to return to the country from Paris soon.
After the announcement, the student leaders left the President’s official residence at midnight, satisfied with the outcome and welcoming the decision.
