Kamala Harris Selects Tim Walz as Vice Presidential Candidate

Kamala Harris has made a bold choice by selecting Tim Walz as her vice-presidential candidate. While this decision may seem like a safe bet at first glance, U.S. expert Jørn Brøndal suggests that it could be a risky move. Brøndal, who is a professor and the head of the Center for American Studies at Southern Denmark University (SDU), indicates that Harris could have opted for the more popular Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania. “This choice may have secured her the critical swing state, which is now uncertain with Walz,” notes Brøndal.

Tim Walz, who is slightly left of center within the Democratic Party, may provide Republicans with the opportunity to portray him and Harris as an extremely socialist duo. Former President Donald Trump has already launched sharp attacks against Harris, and similar rhetoric is expected to be directed at Walz, who, according to Brøndal, has also shifted towards more left-leaning positions on various issues. Walz has altered his stance on significant topics, including abortion rights and gun control, having previously held the highest rating from the National Rifle Association (NRA), but now finds himself rated poorly by the same organization.

The Midwest, where Walz has his roots, is crucial in the upcoming elections, particularly with regard to states like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. Although Republicans may leverage Walz’s position on gun issues against him, Brøndal emphasizes that Walz is a proud owner of hunting firearms, which could resonate with many voters in the region. “These states have been pivotal in the last three elections, so Walz could become an important figure for the Democrats here,” explains Brøndal.

Harris’s more elitist background could be balanced by Walz’s down-to-earth personality and Midwestern roots, which may make him appealing to a broad range of voters. While Brøndal is cautious about promising electoral victory for the Democrats, he points out that the party currently has momentum. “Walz is a strong communicator and competent in the media, so it will be exciting to follow the developments. The Democrats certainly have a chance,” concludes Brøndal.
