Two Swedish citizens, a 24-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman, have been arrested following an explosion at a kiosk on Hans Knudsen Plads in the Østerbro district of Copenhagen on Tuesday. Fortunately, there were no injuries from the explosion. The pair were apprehended by Swedish police at the Øresund Bridge, where they were driving a car registered in Sweden. Danish authorities have requested their extradition to Denmark.
Both individuals are charged with attempted murder and endangering public safety by transporting a potentially explosive device through Copenhagen. During a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, they were remanded in absentia, as they have yet to be extradited from Sweden.
The explosion occurred after an object was thrown into the kiosk, resulting in a hole in the storefront window. Copenhagen Police (Københavns Politi) have not yet determined whether the explosion is gang-related. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal service (EOD) was also present to investigate the area with bomb detection dogs.
This incident is part of a series of recent events involving Swedish citizens in serious criminal activities in Denmark. Among these incidents is a case in Frederiksberg, where a 17-year-old Swedish boy was detained for attempted murder after allegedly shooting at an 18-year-old in a jewelry store. Additionally, two Swedish teenagers were also imprisoned for attempted murder in Kolding and at Blågårds Plads in Copenhagen, respectively.
Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard has announced an increased collaboration with Swedish authorities in response to these incidents, aiming to combat the rising crime committed by Swedish citizens in Denmark.
