Chinese Cyclist Yuan Liying Injured in Olympic Keirin Crash

MONTIGNY-LE-BRETONNEUX, France – Chinese track cyclist Yuan Liying required assistance to leave the track following a dramatic accident in the women’s keirin quarterfinals at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The incident occurred on Thursday, just as Yuan was attempting to advance to the semifinals.

In her bid to secure a place in the semifinals, Yuan attempted to squeeze past Dutch cyclist Steffie van der Peet into a space that did not exist. This resulted in a collision that caused both riders to fall to the ground as they crossed the finish line. The accident also affected Belgian cyclist Nicky Degrendele, who fell as well, while world champion Ellesse Andrews from New Zealand and German cyclist Lea Friedrich had already progressed to the semifinals.

After the crash, Yuan was the last of the involved cyclists to get back on her feet. She displayed clear signs of pain and required support from two of her coaches to reach the infield at the Vélodrome National de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines. Present officials had to halt the cycling event to repair the wooden track, which bore deep marks from the incident.

While accidents are a part of track cycling, especially when riders reach speeds exceeding 70 km/h (approximately 43.5 mph), this was one of the more dramatic incidents at the Olympics. Both Yuan and Van der Peet were eager to recover in time for the semifinals scheduled later that day. Van der Peet, suffering from cuts and abrasions from the fall, was seen with a damaged skinsuit but quickly proved to be ready for her next challenge.

The Olympics continue with masterful performances, and the drama on the track serves as a reminder of the high stakes and intense competition among the participants.
