Danish Citizen Returns to Serve 20-Year Sentence for Rwanda Genocide

The Danish citizen Wenceslas Twagirayezu, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison in July for his involvement in the Rwandan genocide, is now on his way back to Denmark to serve his sentence, confirmed family friend Rasmus Hylleberg to the Danish news agency Ritzau. Twagirayezu was extradited to Rwanda in 2018 under an agreement stipulating that he would serve his sentence in Denmark.

Twagirayezu, who has consistently maintained his innocence throughout the case, asserts that he was not in Rwanda at the time of the alleged crimes. However, the Rwandan prosecution claims that Twagirayezu was involved in a massacre that resulted in the deaths of approximately 2,000 people. A Rwandan court initially acquitted Twagirayezu in January, but this decision was overturned in July, leading to the 20-year prison sentence.

According to Hylleberg, Twagirayezu is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on Friday at the Hillerød Court (Retten i Hillerød). The relevant court listings indicate that the case, registered as a foreign matter, will be addressed at 10:00 AM.

This development marks a new chapter in the long-running legal process surrounding Twagirayezu’s alleged involvement in the Rwandan genocide, which resulted in the deaths of over 800,000 people in 1994. Ritzau has yet to receive a comment from the Danish Attorney General (Rigsadvokaten) regarding the case.
