The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant for Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. This request follows Smotrich’s controversial statement that it may be “justified and moral” to starve Palestinians in Gaza.

In a statement released Thursday, the Ministry described Smotrich’s comments as an “open admission to adopting and boasting about genocidal policies.” The Ministry emphasized that such statements directly contradict international legitimacy resolutions and the global consensus on protecting civilians and ensuring their basic humanitarian needs. It demanded that the ICC issue an arrest warrant for Smotrich for endorsing and supporting genocidal policies. The Ministry also urged countries worldwide to condemn Smotrich and deny him entry into their territories.

Earlier this week, Smotrich stated that Israel “has no choice” but to allow aid supplies into Gaza in order to maintain what he referred to as “international legitimacy” in the conflict. “In the current global reality, we cannot conduct a war. No one in the world will allow us to starve two million people, even if it may be justified and moral to free the hostages,” he remarked.

Israel has imposed a suffocating blockade on Gaza that has brought the region to the brink of starvation. Continuous bombing by the Israeli military has also complicated the distribution of humanitarian aid that reaches Gaza.

Over the past 10 months, nearly 40,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed, and more than 91,600 have been injured, according to Gaza’s health authorities.

ICC prosecutors are seeking arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, but not against Smotrich, who frequently makes anti-Palestinian statements that provoke international outrage. For example, last year he stated that the Palestinian village of Huwara in the occupied West Bank should be “destroyed,” a remark that was deemed “abhorrent” by Washington.

Several nations have condemned Smotrich’s recent comments regarding Gaza. British Foreign Minister David Lammy urged the Israeli government to retract and condemn his statements, asserting, “International law could not be clearer – the deliberate starvation of civilians is a war crime,” in a social media post.

The European Union expressed a similar stance, indicating that it expects the Israeli government to clearly distance itself from Smotrich’s words and to establish transparency concerning reported acts of torture in the Sde Teiman prison (Sde Teiman is a facility located in Israel).

Meanwhile, Israeli media has reported on footage allegedly showing Israeli soldiers committing sexual assault against Palestinian detainees in Sde Teiman prison. Numerous reports have documented horrific mistreatment within the facility, including rape, torture, starvation, and extrajudicial punishments.

On Wednesday, the United States called on Israel to investigate allegations of sexual abuse against Palestinian detainees. “There should be zero tolerance for sexual abuse, rape of any prisoner, period. That is a fundamental belief in the United States,” stated State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller. “And if any detainees have been sexually abused or raped, the Israeli government and the [Israeli military] must thoroughly investigate these actions and hold anyone accountable in accordance with the law.”
