CINCINNATI – Novak Djokovic has announced his withdrawal from the Cincinnati Open, just days after the 37-year-old Serbian athlete secured his first Olympic gold medal. The tournament in Cincinnati confirmed his withdrawal on Thursday.
Djokovic, who claimed the title in Cincinnati last year, was set to compete in the tournament starting next week, which serves as an important warm-up event for the upcoming U.S. Open. The final Grand Slam tournament of the year is scheduled to begin on August 26, with the draw taking place on August 22.
As the defending champion at the U.S. Open, where he won his 24th major title in 2023, Djokovic enjoyed success in Paris, defeating Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) in the men’s singles final.
“We understand that it is a quick transition from his Olympic triumph to coming to Cincinnati,” said Bob Moran, director of the Cincinnati Open. “His title run here last year was so memorable. We look forward to seeing him back on the court soon.”
Djokovic’s withdrawal opens the door for French player Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard to potentially enter the field in Cincinnati.
