Two young men, aged 19 and 20, are now facing additional charges after their arrest on December 30 in connection with the discovery of explosives in a stairwell on Nyborgvej in Odense, Denmark. Funen Police (Fyns Politi) announced on Thursday that the charges now include attempted murder and endangering the lives of others. This development follows extensive technical investigations which revealed that the 4.4 kilograms of plastic explosives found could have caused deadly harm to residents if detonated.
Police Inspector Michael Lichtenstein from Funen Police stated that the incident appears to be part of a personal conflict within the criminal environment rather than a gang confrontation. The police are aware of the unease this incident may have caused among the city’s residents and emphasize their commitment to making Odense a safe place.
Following the discovery of the explosives, which included a firework detonator, the police conducted controlled explosions and risk assessments to determine the extent of the potential damage. This assessment has supported the decision to expand the charges against the two men. Both individuals remain in custody while the investigation continues.
It is important for Funen Police to convey a clear message that crime of this nature will be met with serious consequences. Lichtenstein stressed the importance of public trust and assured that the authorities are taking the situation very seriously.
