Ukrainian Forces Advance Deep into Western Russia, Straining Gas Supplies

Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian soldiers have advanced deep into western Russia, leaving Moscow confused and testing the weak defense of the border. This offensive may also have serious implications for Russia’s natural gas supplies to Europe.

According to Russian officials, Ukrainian soldiers and media, hundreds of troops, supported by armored vehicles, artillery, and drones, were sent to the Kursk region on Tuesday. The attack follows several previous incursions by Russian citizens fighting for Ukraine, who had briefly raided Kursk and the neighboring city of Belgorod in 2023, along with heavy Ukrainian shelling of Belgorod earlier this year.

On Tuesday morning, the Ukrainian forces managed to breach the border and approach Sudzha, a small town with 5,000 residents, whose central square is still dominated by a statue of Vladimir Lenin, the founder of the Soviet Union. However, Sudzha holds strategic significance as the location of the only pumping station that supplies Russian natural gas to Europe via Ukraine.

Despite the ongoing war, Ukraine still rents its Soviet-era gas pipeline to Russia’s gas monopoly, Gazprom, for $2 billion a year, and this transit agreement expires in January, potentially affected by the recent raid. Analyst Aleksey Kushch from Kyiv stated, “The attack poses a risk of a disruption in Russia’s natural gas supplies to the EU via our transit system.” Local media reported that Ukrainian drones have also been sighted over Kurchatov, where the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant, one of the world’s oldest, is located.

“The main objective of the attack is energy resources. The more destabilized they are, the more destabilized the Russian economy becomes,” explained analyst Taras Zahorodniy in television broadcasts.

By Wednesday afternoon, it was reported that Ukrainian forces had surrounded Sudzha, captured three villages, and were seen near ten others. The temporary governor of Kursk, Aleksey Smirnov, described the attacks as a heroic resistance against “Ukrainian Nazis.”

There have been reports of civilian casualties, including three dead and several injured, among them children. Signs of panic and evacuations have been observed, with many residents fleeing Sudzha in haste.

The Russian government has reacted strongly. President Vladimir Putin labeled the raids as a “full-scale provocation from the Kyiv regime” and accused Ukrainian soldiers of targeting civilian sites. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, Ukrainian forces have suffered significant losses, but Ukrainian sources claim that Russia has sustained even greater losses on the battlefield.

Ukrainian sources describe the attack as a “preventive strike” ahead of a planned Russian invasion of northern Ukraine. Some soldiers see the attack as a way to boost public morale in light of the difficult conditions on the eastern front.

Although this latest offensive is one of the most unexpected military developments of the year, analysts assess that its strategic significance may not be as great as it appears. “The results will show whether this is good or bad news,” said former general Ihor Romanenko from the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

As Ukraine advances in the west, Russian forces continue their slow advance in the Donetsk region, where they have captured the city of New York, but Ukrainian soldiers have quickly retaken the area.
