Breakdancing Makes Olympic Debut with 33 Competitors in Paris

“`wordpress
PARIS – A long journey has led to the debut of breaking at the Olympic Games, with 33 breakers from 15 countries and the Olympic Refugee Team ready to compete for gold for the first time in history. The competition will take place on Friday and Saturday, starting with the b-girls competing in a round-robin format.

The competition format employs the Trivium judging system, where judges assess participants based on their technique, vocabulary, execution, musicality, and originality. Similar to gymnastics, breakers must master specific movements while also showcasing their style, personality, and individuality as they dance to the DJ’s music.

“Breaking is about building on individuality and style,” explains Zack Slusser, Vice President of Breaking for Gold USA. “It is important to understand the history behind this art form, which originated from youth culture in the Bronx during the 1970s as a response to social and economic challenges.”

For the breakers, the competition is more than just sport; it is about identity and self-expression. Jeffrey Louis, better known as “b-boy Jeffro,” compares his dance style to a signature: “Your style is your stamp, and if you look good and feel comfortable, you will perform better.”

American b-girl Logan Edra, also known as “b-girl Logistx,” describes her style as infinite, drawing on various influences to find her unique sound. Her colleague from Lithuania, “b-girl Nicka,” emphasizes the importance of learning the foundations of the dance before developing one’s individual style.

The competitions for the b-girls will kick off on Friday with a pre-qualification round between Dutch dancer India Sardjoe and Manizha Talash from the refugee team, who has a poignant story of breaking free from the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.

Despite breaking making its debut on the Olympic stage, the future of the sport remains uncertain. It has not been included in the Olympic program for Los Angeles 2028, and Slusser expresses skepticism about including breaking in Brisbane in 2032. “It was a miracle to be in Paris,” he states. Regardless of the outcome, it is a victory for the breaking community to gain this visibility and opportunity for growth.

Looking ahead, the breakers hope that their Olympic debut will lead to increased support and resources for the breaking community through funding and attention from key stakeholders. “Exposure to the right people who can create change will be significant for our community,” concludes Slusser.
