A new wave of trick thefts, where thieves pose as sellers of gold necklaces to steal their victims’ own necklaces, has led the Funen Police (Fyns Politi) to issue a warning. According to duty officer Kenneth Taanquist, the police were contacted on Thursday by residents from both Nyborg and Odense, who have fallen victim to this type of trickery.
The thieves are described as women of Eastern European descent, aged between 30 and 60 years, with at least one case specifically identified as involving “Romanians.” They approach their victims and attempt to drape a gold necklace around their necks. The victim is typically already wearing a necklace, and at the moment the thieves remove the necklace they have placed around the victim’s neck, they skillfully and discreetly take the victim’s own necklace.
Kenneth Taanquist notes that while this technique may not be new, it is unusual and raises concerns. He further stated that the police have not yet been successful in apprehending any suspects and fear that the thieves may already be moving toward other cities.
The method has been referred to as a “new scam technique” on social media by Funen Police. Taanquist emphasizes that although this approach may have been used in the past, it is the first time it has been observed to such an extent in Funen (Fyn).
