Githa Nelander Joins Danish People’s Party
Githa Nelander, who was previously a member of the New Right (Nye Borgerlige), has decided to return to the Danish People’s Party (Dansk Folkeparti – DF). Following the collapse of New Right and the resignation of its leader Pernille Vermund, Nelander initially planned to run for the party’s leadership position. However, the leadership contest was ultimately won by Martin Henriksen, prompting Nelander to seek new political opportunities within the Danish People’s Party.
Nelander serves on both the municipal council of Næstved and the regional council of Region Zealand (Region Sjælland). She has expressed great enthusiasm for her new collaboration with DF. In a press release, she assured her voters that she would remain true to her political beliefs and continue her work in line with the values of the Danish People’s Party.
This transition comes after a tumultuous year for New Right, during which Nelander initially announced her candidacy for the leadership but later withdrew from the race. She cited ideological differences as the reason for her withdrawal, stating that Henriksen represented a more traditional DF stance and was less liberal than herself.
“Githa Nelander has been a prominent figure in Næstved’s municipal council since 2013, originally elected for the Danish People’s Party. She switched to New Right in 2020 but has now found her way back to DF,” analysts note.
With Nelander’s return, the Danish People’s Party has strengthened its representation in both Næstved’s municipal council and Region Zealand. It will be interesting to see how this newly formed collaboration unfolds in the political arena.
