Iran Prepares Retaliation Against Israel Following Hamas Leader’s Killing

Iran is prepared to carry out an order from its Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, to “severely punish” Israel for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. This was confirmed by a deputy commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC), who stated that Khamenei’s directives for revenge over the blood of martyr Haniyeh are “clear and explicit.”

Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, was killed in July while attending the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Both Hamas and Iran have accused Israel of the assassination, but the Israeli government has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility.

Since the assassination, Tehran has issued statements suggesting that retaliation against Israel is imminent, a country known for targeting its enemies in the region, including in Iran. As tensions rise, the U.S. government has also responded to Iranian threats. John Kirby, a spokesperson for U.S. National Security, stated that the U.S. is prepared to defend Israel with ample resources in the region.

To address the escalating unrest in the Middle East, U.S. military leadership has announced the deployment of additional resources, including an aircraft carrier, to the area. Despite the increasing tensions, the U.S. and other Western countries have called for de-escalation. In a joint statement from the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt, there was an appeal for Israel and Hamas to resume negotiations to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst, Marwan Bishara, points out that the U.S. does not wish for a larger regional escalation so close to the upcoming elections in November. Washington’s insistence on ceasefire negotiations indicates that they are trying to exert as much pressure as possible on Iran to delay potential military actions against Israel.

Meanwhile, Hamas has appointed Yahya Sinwar as its new political leader following Haniyeh’s death. Abu Obeida, spokesman for Hamas’ military wing, has stated that the Qassam Brigades support Sinwar and are “fully prepared to execute his decisions.” The appointment of Sinwar as Hamas’ new political leader will also coincide with forthcoming negotiations shortly after Haniyeh’s assassination.

However, it remains unclear how Sinwar, who is wanted by Israel and is currently in an undisclosed location in Gaza, will communicate with negotiation mediators. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, known for his hardline stance, has already presented a list of conditions for the upcoming mediation.

Therefore, there is significant uncertainty regarding the outcomes of these discussions, but the overall tension in the region is evident, and countries like the U.S. are attempting to calm the situation, as a ceasefire in Gaza could potentially contribute to regional stability.
