Shooting Rattles Copenhagen Neighborhood But Residents Carry On

Bar carts, dog walkers, and casual conversations among neighbors characterize the street scene on Hans Tavsens Gade in Nørrebro, Copenhagen, a day after a violent shooting shook the area. On Thursday evening, a man was killed, and a random woman was hit by gunfire. Although the street now appears mundane, local residents still feel the repercussions of the tragic event.

Pernille, who has lived in the area for two decades, recounted hearing the gunshots from her apartment. “It was terrifying. I stayed indoors with my children for the rest of the evening,” she said. Nevertheless, she has no plans to move from her affordable cooperative apartment (andelslejlighed), despite the fact that such shootings evoke memories of past incidents, such as a drive-by shooting in 2006.

The aftermath of the shooting has already been cleaned up, but flowers lay outside the parsonage (præstebolig) where the 43-year-old man was shot. A dog walker passing by commented, “It’s almost the most tragic part—that it no longer surprises us,” before quickly moving on.

The police have yet to apprehend the shooter, and it is still unclear whether he is Swedish, as there have been multiple such cases recently. The Swedish television channel SVT is also covering the incident, but it has not yet been determined if the shooter was one of their nationals.

Pierre Balser, who lives nearby, arrived a few minutes after the shooting occurred. “I expected everything to be chaotic and hectic, but it was mostly quiet. Everything was dark and sad,” he said. Despite the incident, he does not intend to move away.

The police continue to maintain a presence in the area, and a motorcycle officer can be seen dealing with a man on an electric scooter who is not wearing a helmet. Karsten, a local resident, expressed that the situation reminds him of “the Wild West” and is concerned that shootings have become a part of daily life. “I just hope I’m not in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he stated, adding that he will continue his daily walks on the street despite the recent events.

While the residents refuse to be intimidated and carry on with their everyday activities, the shooting underscores a disturbing reality they must confront.
