Thomas Vinterberg’s latest television series, “Families Like Ours,” has received another prestigious recognition by being selected for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). This selection comes shortly after the series was chosen for the Venice Film Festival. Created in collaboration with Zentropa and TV 2, the series now has an opportunity to reach a broad audience, this time in North America. In a press release from TV 2, Vinterberg expressed his joy and gratitude for the selection, viewing it as an important milestone for the series’ international expansion.
The 49th edition of TIFF will take place from September 5 to September 15, where “Families Like Ours” will be presented to the North American audience. Co-written by Thomas Vinterberg and Bo Hr. Hansen, and directed by Vinterberg himself, the series tells the story of a Denmark where the government suddenly decides to fully evacuate the country, leading to chaos and dividing the population while the hope of reuniting with loved ones remains strong.
Zentropa is responsible for the production of the series, which is set to premiere in Denmark on TV 2 and TV 2 Play later this year. “I am very grateful to return to Toronto – and for the festival choosing to showcase all seven episodes,” Vinterberg stated in the press release. This is not Vinterberg’s first time attending TIFF; in 2020, he presented the film “Another Round” (original title: “Druk”), which later won an Oscar for Best International Feature Film.
Throughout his career, Vinterberg has achieved significant recognition, receiving around 25 awards both nationally and internationally. He was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Director in 2021, but the award went to ChloĂ© Zhao that year. This new selection for TIFF further confirms Vinterberg’s position as one of Denmark’s most talented and celebrated filmmakers.
