– Defending champion Jessica Pegula secured her place in the quarterfinals of the National Bank Open on Friday, defeating qualifier Ashlyn Krueger with scores of 6-2, 6-4 under windy conditions. The third-seeded Pegula, hailing from Buffalo, New York, took advantage of Krueger’s nine double faults to emerge victorious in the match.
In last year’s final in Montreal, Pegula triumphed over Liudmila Samsonova, and she will now attempt to defend her title. In the evening session, top-seeded player Diana Shnaider, who is seeded 14th, faced off against Pegula, while the second seed, Aryna Sabalenka, played against Katie Boulter.
